In Frontiers in Ageing Neuroscience, an article "A Life-long Approach to Physical Activity for Brain Health" was recently published (May 2017). Some of the key findings were that there is growing evidence that brains benefit from regular physical activity all the way from childhood to old age. Imaging studies have found that in fitter children, the parts of the brain involved in memory and attention are larger. Some studies have also found that more physically active teenagers have better academic outcomes. Another key finding was that the benefits of physical activity across childhood and adolescence are not limited to cognitive performance and academic achievement. The evidence found from the review points to a number of psychological benefits of physical activity including the reduction of depressive and anxiety and improvements in self esteem.
